Raíces Tortilleria Factory, a family-run tortillería in Belvidere, Ill., turns out as much as 1,000 pounds of tortillas on its busiest weekend days for local families, catered events and community celebrations, MyStateline reported (opens in new tab) on Oct. 14 in a Hispanic Heritage Month segment. Owner Rosa Ochoa told the station the work keeps the shop busy every day of the week. “A lot of work goes into this,” she said. Customers buy in bulk for quinceañeras, weddings and parties, and the shop packs tortillas by the pound or half pound, the station reported.
The business is getting ready to move. MyStateline reported that the move into a new building is planned for next summer. In posts to customers this month, the shop said its next home will be next to Ochoa Income Tax Service and that it will keep operating at 109A Buchanan St. until the remodel of the new space is complete. The shop said it has no official opening date for the new location.
To give itself more time for the remodel, the tortillería switched to temporary hours on Oct. 12 and now opens only Friday through Sunday, according to its posts. Along with fresh tortillas, it makes tortilla chips, rice and beans, salsas, guacamole and pico de gallo in house, and it takes large catering orders if customers call ahead, WIFR reported (opens in new tab) in July.
The Belvidere Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting (opens in new tab) for the shop on Nov. 2, 2024.
