Tortilla prices in Puebla could rise MX$1–2 a kilo this fall as white maize gets scarce, the head of the regional masa-and-tortilla chamber told Cholula Digital Sept. 28, 2026, while Morelos producers are already charging more. Mexico's agriculture ministry (SADER) maintains national white-maize inventories are adequate and expects the Spring–Summer 2026 crop to steady costs.

Ismael Ávila Briteño, who leads the Cámara de la Industria de la Masa y la Tortilla for Puebla, Tlaxcala and Veracruz, said private-supplier white maize climbed roughly 29.7% in about a month, to MX$9,600 per ton from MX$7,400. The state's more than 7,000 tortillerías are struggling to buy grain because the April–May harvest is nearly used up and some stored corn has pest damage. Puebla's average tortilla is about MX$18/kg; he said MX$19–20 is already showing up in Puebla city and Amozoc, and expects relief in early November with new-crop maize.

In Morelos, Consejo de la Masa y la Tortilla president Antonio Vázquez Quezada blamed drought for maize near MX$9,000/t and asked the state farm agency, Sedagro, for help, Conurbados (Sept. 23) and Excélsior (Sept. 24) reported. Some shops have added about MX$2/kg; Puente de Ixtla counters were at MX$30, or MX$32 delivered, against a Cuernavaca SNIIM average near MX$26.67. Excélsior cited a roughly 50% maize increase, a sector claim rather than a verified series.

For U.S. plants and masa suppliers, this is a read on white-maize tightness in key Mexican states, not a forecast for U.S. retail prices.
