Lulu's Tortilleria in Yuba City, Calif., has started offering free delivery of tortillas and meals to families in need as immigration enforcement activity increased in Northern California, KCRA reported (opens in new tab) on Nov. 2. Owner Saul Lucatero told reporter Maricela De La Cruz the shop made the move so people would not have to be out driving as much.
"Think about the ice cream truck guy but tortillas," Lucatero told KCRA. "When we saw that ICE activity picked up a lot and people were concerned about leaving, I said, 'Hey, why don't we start to free delivery, doesn't matter how much they order. That way, anything we can do to reduce how much people are out in the street driving around, you know, let's do that.'" He also told the station, "This could be the last meal that a family has together for a while."
Video accompanying KCRA's Nov. 2 report shows a tortilla line at the shop making tortillas. Lulu's is a working tortilleria, not only a prepared-food counter: the shop's website (opens in new tab) lists freshly made tortillas by the pound, including regular, red and green corn styles, taco tortillas, flour tortillas and nixtamal, along with salsas, cheeses and weekend carnitas, and gives the address as 535 Second Street, Yuba City, CA 95991.
California business filings list Lulu's Tortilleria & Salsas LLC under Saul E. Lucatero, bizprofile shows (opens in new tab). KCRA also interviewed Chusa, a mother of three who has been receiving community food support and said she is afraid to leave home; the station tied that account to the same local relief effort that includes Lucatero's deliveries.
